The Conference
By the end of 2019, there was an outbreak of a virus that rapidly killed more than 50 people in Wuhan, China where the incident was first reported. WHO on observing the etiology of the virus technically referred to it as Covid-19. What was initially regarded as China-centric shock has now become a global crisis disrupting business, official and personal activities globally.
The outbreak that had killed over 150,000 people as at May 2 and likely to climb significantly higher across the globe had dealt a severe blow to the global economy. It has disrupted and is still disrupting businesses, economic and financial activities. Businesses are shutting down, operations, factories closing, schools are forced to close down, sports, social and entertainment activities have been put on hold, global equities and commodities markets have been severely affected. Oil prices have been hit hard due to drastic cut in global oil consumption, compounded by the ongoing price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia. As at May 2nd officially confirmed cases in Nigeria stood at 2170 with 351 recovered cases and 68 deaths excluding several deaths in Kano.
The 12th Annual Conference of INEN invites scholarly papers from the members of the Institute scholars, young researchers, policy makers, politicians, NGOs and media practitioners to critically examine the effects of Covid-19 on the Nigerian economy in particular, and the global economy in general; and also the governments’ containment measures with the following critical questions to be navigated at the Conference.
- What will be the impact of COVID-19 on the Nigerian and Global economy?
- What sectors of the Nigerian and global economy are most vulnerable?
- What will be the relationship between the Nigerian economy and the Global economy post-Covid-19 period?
- How does Covid-19 impact financial markets?
- What lessons are the affected countries will learn from the pandemic?
- How effective have governments’ containment measure be in curbing the spread of the pandemic?
